Winter Weather Advisory

Now that winter is upon us, we would like to give you some tips on how to keep your pet comfortable in the cold.

  • Provide your pet with shelter that will keep them dry and protect them from the wind.
  • Slightly increase the amount of food that you feed your outdoor pets. Your pet will need the extra energy to keep itself warm.
  • Provide your pet with a heated water dish to encourage water consumption. Animals will not drink water if it is frozen or too cold.
  • Be more observant of your pet’s needs. If they seem more stiff in the cold they may have arthritis that can be easily treated.
  • Weigh your pet once a month. Weight loss can be an early indicator that there is a problem.
  • Monitor your pet’s stool. Changes in stool color and consistency is another good and early indicator that there may be a problem.
  • Be aware of changes in the weather. If it is going to be really cold at night your pet may be more comfortable inside for the night.

These are just a few and simple tips that will help keep your pet comfortable and healthy during the cold, winter months.
